The project consisted of applying DFI’s flagship Diamon-Fusion® coating to over 15,000 square feet of glass at various sections of the newly constructed Kravis Center, designed by well-known architect Rafael Viñoly -Menendez.
The Kravis Center consists of a five-level, 162,000 square-foot academic and administrative facility, serving as the western gateway to the Claremont McKenna campus.
The most famous section of the project includes “the cube” or “living room” all glass structure, situated in the courtyard area, representing a unique and inspiring work of art and is the only structure of its kind built in Seismic Zone IV which includes all of the west coast of the US.
“…I was challenged by the recurring costs of cleaning the glass surfaces and looked for solutions that would help me both maintain and protect their appearance.” explained Brian Worley, Facility Manager at Claremont McKenna College. “My research led me to Diamon-Fusion. My expectation is that the Diamon-Fusion coated windows will require two-thirds fewer cleanings, which will make the project pay for itself in three years ….”
Through DFI’s patented nano-coating process, the treatment to the glass facade creates a water repellent effect which enables ease of cleaning and protection against scratches, abrasion and environmental elements.
Therefore considerably reducing the overall costs of maintenance to the building. The Diamon-Fusion® nano-coating is optically clear, and does not affect the natural reflection of the glass exterior.
DFI was approached by the Facilities Director of Claremont McKenna College when the team determined the cost to maintain and clean the glass would quickly become a challenge.
“With a large amount of glass surfaces to maintain and a high degree of expectations as to the level of that maintenance, I was challenged by the recurring costs of cleaning the glass surfaces and looked for solutions that would help me both maintain and protect their appearance.” explained Brian Worley, Facility Manager at Claremont McKenna College.
“My research led me to Diamon-Fusion. My expectation is that the Diamon-Fusion coated windows will require two-thirds fewer cleanings, which will make the project pay for itself in three years. The process was completed this past month, just hours ahead of a major storm. I spent part of the next day observing how the treated surfaces shed wind-driven sheets of rain in comparisons to the windows that I excluded from the project as a control comparison. I am very impressed and am looking to incorporate more Diamon-Fusion coating projects across the campus.”
“By treating the glass façade with Diamon-Fusion® coating, we are reducing the need for cleaning and protecting the glass from harsh elements.” according to Carl Christ, Director of On-Site Services for Diamon-Fusion International. “This is one of several hi-end architectural projects DFI has worked on over the past few years and we are so pleased to see the word is spreading among the leading fabricators and architects alike, about the value-added benefits of utilizing Diamon-Fusion® coating on these exceptional properties.”
DFI is the world’s leading glass coating company to provide on-site field services, coating and restoring some of the world’s most famous, unique architectural structures, saving owners and property managers hundreds of thousands of dollars in cleaning and glass replacement costs.
Back in 2010, the DFI team completed a large-scale coating project for the famous “Old Tiffany Building” in New York City, a Crystal Achievement Award for Most Innovative Commercial Retrofit Project by Glass Magazine. The patented Diamon-Fusion coating was applied onto the exterior glass surfaces of the property in order to protect the glass at this location from long-term damage, to reduce projected window cleaning expenditures, and to improve the overall aesthetic beauty of the property.
There has been no need for any window cleaning at all during the 18 months since the Diamon-Fusion coating was applied and the property manager has no plans for any window cleaning service at this location for the foreseeable future.
The Old Tiffany Building application, along with several other high-profile commercial projects, prompted DFI to develop of a suite of products and services to help commercial property owners and developers, on a global basis, keep their buildings beautified, while reducing harmful chemical usage and the effort needed.
“…reduce maintenance costs, protect our glass entrance doors from scratching and guard against staining from building material leaching.”
…see how easy the removal of paint overspray is on the Diamond Fusion treated surface.
“…enabled us to solve a key issue with condensation within our refrigerated display case.”
“…now their biggest problem is the workers stopping to check themselves out in the mirror glass…”
To date, DFI has treated more than 80,000 square feet of glass.
… we did not have to incur the cost of replacing the glass and brilliance of the surface has been fully restored.
By using Diamon-Fusion® we reduced the need to clean our glass surfaces by 90%.
After trying several other cleaning methods, the Jefferson Development Group turned to the team @ DFI Building Beautiful to restore the glazing to a like-new condition.
