IRVINE, CALIF.,—Thursday, September 4, 2014—While both Contact Angle and Sliding Angle individually are informative measurements of the core benefits of “Easy-to-Clean” coatings, each alone is only half of the equation. When considered together they become much more powerful. A higher Contact Angle tells relatively how much less a surface will be stained, because the water that does stick will be repelled and will dry in smaller spots producing smaller stains. A lower Sliding Angle indicates how much less often you’ll need to clean, because the less water that sticks to the surface, the fewer stains will occur. Additionally, a lower Sliding Angle also indicates that any spots that do occur will be relatively easier to remove, because it is more difficult for things to stick. When evaluated together a complete measurement of how “easy to clean” the coating is revealed. Until now the glass industry as a whole has only considered half of the equation for hydrophobic protective coatings by evaluating only the Contact Angle, however Sliding Angle is just as, if not more, important in evaluating performance.

Contact Angle – Why It’s Important
In the late 1990’s, in an emerging field of coatings that made glass harder to stain and easier to clean, a few competitors started using Contact Angle measured in degrees to compare the water repellency of these coatings. This was because one of the main characteristics of these coatings is that they are all water-repellent or hydrophobic. It was believed that the more water-repellent a surface is the more water will bead off and so the minerals and contaminants (such as body oils, soap, etc.) that water carries cannot be deposited on the glass. Unfortunately, we’ve learned that this is not always true, so Contact Angle is not enough.
Sliding Angle – The Other Half of the Equation
In its simplest explanation, Sliding Angle measures the “slickness” of a surface – whether coated or not. A drop of water – the size of which is determined by the standard test – is placed at one end of the sample of coated glass. Then the sample is tilted until the drop of water begins sliding. The tilt of the glass at that very instant is the Sliding Angle. The lower the Sliding Angle the slicker the surface. The slicker the surface, the less things like water and contaminants can stick. As it measures how easy or difficult it is for things to stick to the surface, Sliding Angle therefore can be that credible proxy to measure “Easy-to-Clean” that the industry needs. So the lower the Sliding Angle of a surface, the easier it is to clean.

The project, awarded to Sao-Paulo based T2G Technical Glass Group, a DFI Licensee, has utilized the award-winning Diamon-Fusioncoating on glass units on the stadium structure glass panels, to protect the glass from harmful environmental elements, while helping to reduce the maintenance of the glass over time. Through DFI’s patented nano-coating process, the eco-friendly chemical treatment creates a highly water repellent and anti-soiling effect which enables ease of cleaning and protection against scratches, impacts, abrasion, and environmental elements, therefore considerably reducing the costs of maintenance to the facade. The Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil is the stadium of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, with a seating capacity of 65,807. The glass of the stadium has been designed with a curvature intended to simulate the visual effect of a ball hitting the net. Special 26 meter seamless beams were developed to support the structure. The paneling solutions rationalizes the 5,400 square meters (58,125 square feet) double curved freeform glass surface into 855 planar and cylindrical panels, all in hot tent toughened glass. This solutions allowed for minimizing the number of shapes necessary by 93% reducing costs considerably, while the photo-voltaic glass powers the air conditioning.

(DFI Nanotechnology), global developer and exclusive licensor of patented hydrophobic nanotechnologies, announced today Vitro, its partner in Mexico, has fashioned a hydrophobic coating treatment, utilizing the 3D Chamber System designed by Diamon-Fusion International (DFI). The skyscraper project, known as the Altreca Tower in Monterrey Mexico consisted of treating curtain wall glass approximately 86,110 square-feet (8,000m2) in size with HydroClean™ by DFI.
The project consists of 22 levels of offices and Penthouse with double height. Plants from 514.35 m² for a total of approximately 15,526.66 square meters of office space area.
The selected materials are of the highest quality, which include, granite and marble floors and walls. Thinking about energy consumption and maintenance costs reduction, double tempered Low-e glass facade was contemplated in the west facade, which generates an air of 6mm which helps decrease by 20% the thermal load of the building by the action of the sun, resulting in significant energy savings.
Vitro’s HydroClean DFI nano-coating was applied adding a “green” eco-friendly feature to the exterior glass facade to keep the building looking like new for years to come, with an easy-to-clean feature, added brilliance to the glass, added scratch and impact resistance, added electrical insulation, as well as providing a significant reduction in cleaning cycles and associated maintenance costs while savings both water and chemical (cleaners) consumption.

The superior DFI products restore, protect and help maintain a variety of surfaces, including glass, granite, tile, porcelain, stainless steel and others. This new distribution channel increases DFI’s network of partners in Europe, as the company continues its strategic expansion plans globally. Glass Machinery Solutions is also in the process of becoming a DFI Authorized Service Provider for its patent-pending FuseCube™ technology.

Diamon-Fusion International (DFI), the global developer and exclusive licensor of patented hydrophobic nanotechnologies, announced today, Scott Wingate has joined the team as Acting Chief Financial Officer, according to Russell Slaybaugh, General Manager and Vice President of DFI. Wingate brings extensive cross functional experience in strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, business development, strategic alliances, project management, corporate culture building, and contract negotiations. In his role, Wingate will be responsible for M&A advisory and post-acquisition integration, review/design of control and financial systems, budgets and projections.

Wingate holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Applied Economics/Finance from University of San Francisco and Masters in Business Administration degree in Functional and Corporate Strategy from University of Southern California. He is also Chairman Emeritus at USC Marshall Alumni Association, President Emeritus at Institute of Management Accountants, OC Chapter and a member of Financial Executives International, OC Chapter.
